We often campaign or support campaign efforts on issues of direct concern to the black community. Such campaigns include our support of the Mary Seacole Centre petition to the BBC, which resulted in the showing of a documentary on the great Crimean War nurse heroine, Mary Seacole on terrestrial television as part of its Secondary School programming. The inspiring story of Mary Seacole has now become part of the Key Stage 1 Education curriculum.
We are also directly involved in conjunction with Black Mental Health UK to challenge the effects of the DNA database system, which has resulted in a total overrepresentation of young black males having their DNA stored on the database (three out of four young black males have their DNA recorded despite the vast majority having committed no offence at all). You can support our campaigns and petitions by attending the events, signing online petitions or indeed telling us of a worthwhile issue affecting people of African or Caribbean origin that you would like us to support.
